Plastic plastic everywhere! Re-use your plastic bottles to help make your garden green!

Spring has finally sprung and the gardening fever has taken root! You’ve spent your winter months planning your garden, ordering your seeds and getting your gardening equipment all ready. All the great new plants you are trying this year as well as past favorites are all snug and cozy in their little section of terra firma. Everything is planted and now you’re caring for these seedlings like a proud parent. Watering and fertilizing, pruning and weeding.

Just when you’ve got it down to a rhythm and you’re getting into the that green zone zen with your green family of plants, you find out that you have to take a business trip for a couple of days out of town! Who’s going to watch over your sproutlets? Who’s going to care for them and water them?

That’s where that plastic bottle that you knew you shouldn’t have bought to quench your insatiable thirst comes in. Instead of filling up a landfill with these plastic bottles that will outlast mankind, you can now find an additional use that not only keeps these out of the landfill but continues working for you day and night

Plastic bottles, as it turns out, tend to work great as drip watering devices. They actually sell great Plastic Bottle Watering Spikes which attach to the top of your used plastic bottle which you then fill with water, turn it upside down and push the spike into the soil.

The nice thing about using these spikes is that it will hold your bottle in place as well as let the water drip further into the soil. These reusable plastic bottles work great in potted plants, indoor plants, outdoor container plants and even in your garden!

Another great feature of using these plastic bottle water feeders is that you can also put fertilizer into the plastic bottle with the water so that it also gets the necessary elements that are important for good root growth and plant health.

Now you might think that these will look out of place with your plants, but you can have it blend in great by using a clear bottle and adding a bit of food coloring into the water so that it adds a bit of flair to your plant, or blends in. Even without the Plastic Bottle Watering Spikes you can still make the plastic bottles work for you.

You can create your own plastic bottle watering device by simply poking or drilling a small hole into the cap of the plastic bottle, filling the plastic bottle with water and inverting the plastic bottle into the soil. You may have to experiment with the size or quantity of holes you put into the cap. One small hole the size of a small finishing nail will slowly water your plant over the course of several days or longer. The more holes you add or the larger the hole, the faster the water will flow and the quicker your plastic bottle will empty.

I’ve found that smaller plastic bottles usually stay in place fairly well, but for larger plastic bottles, you may want to place a stick along side the bottle and tape or rubber band it into place.

So instead of filling up the landfill with your used plastic bottles, give them a new useful life and turn them into plastic bottle watering devices. Your plants will love you for it!
